Every double pane window eventually fails. That is the ugly truth. Same goes for triple pane windows, it’s going to happen. The amount of time your windows will last depends on the material used and the quality of the window construction. Wood framed windows tend to last about 20 years (if well maintained). Wood/aluminum clad windows last about this long too, and traditional aluminum windows typically last around 15 years. Worst of all is vinyl. Most newer cheap vinyl windows, in addition to being ugly, can begin failing in only 5 years, 10 if you are lucky.
What causes seal failure? The answer may surprise you. The biggest culprit is the sun. When sunshine hits a double or triple pane window the air inside heats up significantly-- think of a car on a hot day! This heat gain causes the sealed window to expand. At night, the window cools and contracts pulling in air and humidity. Day after day, year after year, your windows expand and contract.
Unsurprisingly, the biggest cause of early seal failure in wood framed windows is lack of maintenance. Wood windows are great but unless you caulk the area where the wood and glass meet and paint the frames every two years or so, they will fail. If you do not spend the time doing this maintenance, moisture from rain and snow gets down between the wood and glass, pooling at the bottom and causing the window to rot from the inside out. Same goes for aluminum clad windows. They will also rot from the inside out but, for a different reason. Because it is a two piece process, meaning the aluminum and wood are not bonded into one piece, water gets trapped in between the metal and the wood. When water gets trapped against wood, rot is inevitable.

Then there’s vinyl. Vinyl windows, no matter how expensive, expand and contract significantly. Think about it, vinyl is plastic and heat causes plastic to change shape or melt. The hot sun beating on your house day in and day out heats up vinyl windows and changes their shape, leaving your house vulnerable to the elements.
How do you know if your windows’ seals have failed? It is easy to see. Your windows become cloudy or foggy, and you can’t see through them. Due to the increased energy loss the seal failure causes, your heating/cooling bill will be even more expensive. Besides, who wants to live with windows they cannot see through?
Before you get too upset thinking about how your windows will eventually fail and rot, we want to let you know that there is a product on the market that is GUARANTEED not to rot or have seal failure.* Renewal by Andersen is made from a material called Fibrex®. What is Fibrex? Fibrex is a patented composite made of 40% recycled wood for strength, and a space age polymer for maintenance-free longevity.
