2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
All-new, fourth-generation C-Class grows up
by permission of New Car Test Drive

The 2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class brings all-new versions of these entry-luxury sedans. Longer and wider than last year's models, they accommodate four or five occupants with much more interior room than before. They also offer improved performance and better fuel economy than last year's models.

The small family sedan that started out as the "baby Benz" in 1982 and morphed into the C-Class has matured through three generations into the company's most popular model worldwide, with more than 6 million units sold. This latest generation of the smallest Mercedes-Benz sedan marks a big step in its maturation.

Four switchbacking hours out of Chiang Mai, my driver turns off the two-lane highway onto a dirt road, bumps along for a few minutes, then stops and opens my door. He leads me down a narrow path to a riverside clearing, where my luggage and I are loaded onto a teak long-tail boat. We float about two miles down a meandering stretch of the Ruak River...

Remarkable for both its ambition and its achievement, Azera is Hyundai's entry into the full-size, near-luxury segment. Azera is a worthy alternative to the Toyota Avalon and Nissan Maxima. Introduced just last year as a 2006 model, Azera has already out-scored the highly regarded Toyota Avalon to earn second place in the segment in J.D. Power and Associate's 2006 Initial Quality Study. It was also rated the Most Appealing Large Car in J.D. Power's Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, and has received the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety's (IIHS) top crash test rating for frontal offset impacts. That's an impressive combination of accolades.

In design and styling, in creature comforts, powertrain and in safety features, Azera offers as much or more than anything else in the class, and at a lower price.

2007 Dodge Nitro
All-new mid-size SUV.
by permission of New Car Test Drive

The 2007 Dodge Nitro is an all new mid-size SUV. Dodge redesigned the full-size Durango in 2004, and since then has been planning the Nitro, which is 22 inches shorter. There are many mid-size SUVs out there, and Dodge wanted the Nitro to be distinctive, in order to keep up its reputation for bold styling. The result is a very squared-off vehicle, with exaggerated fender flares.

The Nitro looks and feels larger than its size, with a high seating position that SUV owners like, and good cabin space. It features Load 'n' Go, a cargo storage system whereby the rear seats and front passenger seat fold totally flat in seconds; additionally, the cargo floor slides rearward out over the rear bumper, and can hold 400 pounds, making the loading of heavy objects much easier. It could prevent back injuries.

Baby Boomers seem willing to try anything to slow the physical aspects of growing older. Getting A Grasp On Labels And Vintages

For wine drinkers throughout history, one of the most mystifying aspects of wine has been its inconsistency. A vineyard that produced great wine one year could yield something barely drinkable the next.

What makes an ideal vintage? A great year is produced by a combination of factors that are all related to weather. First, it requires a warm spring, with no freezes and mild temperatures during bud-break (when the first new buds appear on the vines), then steady, moderate weather throughout the growing season (April to September in the Northern Hemisphere; October to March in the Southern Hemisphere), especially at the time of flowering (in June or December, respectively).

"As I grew up, I knew that as a building Fenway Park was on the level of Mount Olympus, the Pyramid at Giza, the nation's capitol, the czar's Winter Palace, and the Louvre — except, of course, that is better than all those inconsequential places."

- Baseball Commissioner
Bart Giamatti
