As trends go, I continue to hear a lot about fuel economy which frequently leads to a discussion about two of today’s interesting vehicle types. The first of course is the hybrid, which as you know derives its power from a combination of battery power and a gasoline internal combustion engine working in unison. The second is the tried and true diesel, significantly re-engineered to burn much cleaner while delivering great performance and record low-emissions levels.
Let me first discuss hybrids. It’s no secret that these vehicles have set sales records in 2008. In fact, sales have jumped by over 66% this year alone! These greener vehicles are so popular that nearly every main-stream auto manufacturer has or will be offering a hybrid model and in some cases, several models. This is a great sign that the industry is continuing to embrace the importance of reducing hydrocarbon emissions while building vehicles that will deliver you to nearly any destination in style, comfort and do so using less fuel!

 We searched EPA combined fuel economy ratings to uncover the most fuel-efficient vehicles built by GM, Ford and Chrysler. The EPA ratings are derived on a formula based on 45% highway driving and 55% city driving. Although motorists can get the best fuel economy in manual-transmission models, we ranked based on EPA estimates for automatic transmissions, which are much more popular among American drivers. Traditional manual transmissions account for less than 10% of annual passenger-car sales, says Mike Omotoso, an analyst at J.D. Power and Associates.
